The Polegate Town Council Public Information Day held on Monday was a resounding success, despite the heavy rain that could have discouraged attendance. The impressive turnout demonstrated the community’s strong commitment to safety and well-being. In addition to the electric blanket testing, the event featured several key organizations, including Citizens Advice, Steps to Stay Independent, East Sussex Warmer Homes, and First Responders, all of whom provided essential resources on maintaining independence at home, keeping homes energy-efficient, and being prepared for emergencies.
During the event, 37 electric blankets were tested, and 49% of them failed safety inspections. An important safety rule was that any blanket over 10 years old automatically failed due to the increased risk of wear and tear, which can lead to fire hazards or electric shocks. This precaution ensured that even older blankets, which might appear safe, were not posing hidden dangers to their owners.
For all failed blankets, the wires were cut on-site to guarantee they could no longer be used, immediately eliminating any risk of accidents. This proactive step was crucial in ensuring the safety of attendees, especially with winter fast approaching and electric blanket use increasing.
The high failure rate highlighted the importance of such events, not only for safety but also for raising awareness.
