“Jubilee Nature Reserve”
Background
Polegate Town Council entered into discussions with landowners of a parcel of land which was no longer required by developers. A section of land was subject to adverse possession, in order that the town council could take over the whole area once is was transferred. Raglan homes, now Stonewater, as local housing association who run the Sidings properties, gifted the land to the Council.
Meanwhile the Council asked Sacred Earth and Airs if they would support the project going forward and assist in setting up a friends of group to steward the land. A new fence was erected to replace the broken fencing and to protect the land as there are many rare species on the land.
Sacred earth embarked upon a conservation clearance exercise, to identify the species.
There have been many visits to the land by groups interested in using the land for various types of activity. A friends of group is being formed in order that priorities of using the land can be set up.
Naming of the land
A consultation has taken place for ideas to name the land. The names were then put forward to be whittled down to 5, at the annual town assembly these were brought to two for the council to decide. The final name will be selected from two and decided upon at the end June. The two names are Jubilee Nature Reserve and Bright Land.
Jubilee Nature Reserve was chosen.
The friends of group continue to meet with the focus on land management.
