Polegate was delighted to welcome guests this week from its twin town of Saintry-sur-Seine as part of a special exchange visit marking the 35th anniversary of the twinning between the two communities.
The visit began with a warm reception hosted in Polegate, where members of the visiting delegation were welcomed by the Mayor of Polegate, Cllr Stephen Shing, and the Town Council’s representative to the Polegate Twinning Association, Cllr Dan Dunbar.
Among the delegation was Patrick Rauscher, Mayor of Saintry-sur-Seine whose attendance added particular significance to this year’s exchange. During the reception, Mayor Rauscher presented Mayor Shing with his mayoral sash as part of a ceremonially exchange of gifts. The gesture symbolised the enduring friendship and strong partnership that has flourished between Polegate and Saintry-sur-Seine over more than three decades.
During their stay, the visitors enjoyed a varied programme showcasing the history, heritage and natural beauty of Sussex. Highlights included a visit to Rye, where guests attended a fascinating talk on local history at the Rye Heritage Centre, and a private guided tour of Petworth House and its celebrated gardens.
Guests also spent time with their host families, exploring the Sussex countryside and visiting local landmarks such as the Seven Sisters. Some members of the delegation also travelled to London to experience the capital’s world-famous attractions.
The visit concluded with a joint evening celebration hosted alongside Hailsham Twinning Association and their guests from Gournay-en-Bray, bringing together friends from all three four towns to celebrate the cultural links and lasting friendships fostered through the twinning programme.
Cllr Dan Dunbar the Town Council’s representative to the Polegate Twinning Association said “Celebrating 35 years of twinning with Saintry-sur-Seine is a proud milestone for Polegate. These exchanges strengthen international friendships, promote cultural understanding and create lasting connections between residents of our two towns. It was a pleasure to welcome our French friends and to share the very best of Sussex with them.”
