An emergency repair has been successfully completed on the A22 after a defect was identified in the carriageway that required immediate attention.

The A22 is a concrete road and one of the concrete slabs had started to lift, creating a bump in the surface. This made the carriageway unsafe for vehicles travelling in lane one and required urgent action to protect road users and maintain the safety of the network.

An emergency lane closure was put in place while investigations were carried out, and a repair solution was developed. Throughout the closure, electronic message signs were used to keep road users informed and help manage traffic through the area.

Working alongside specialist contractor Geobear, we carried out a programme of repairs to stabilise the affected section of road. This involved drilling small holes through the concrete slabs and injecting a specialist material beneath them to strengthen the ground and fill any voids. Once the slabs had been stabilised, the existing road surface tarmac was removed and the carriageway was resurfaced.

The main repair works were then delivered over the course of one week using overnight full road closures. To minimise disruption to residents and road users, the A22 was reopened during the day whenever possible.

Safety was a key consideration throughout the project. During the works, a Highway Resource Solutions (HRS) incursion warning system was used to provide an additional layer of protection for the workforce. The system created a digital safety perimeter around the work zone and was designed to alert operatives immediately if anyone entered the closure area. This early warning allows teams to move to a place of safety while the situation is managed.

While the works caused some unavoidable disruption, carrying out the main repairs overnight helped reduce the impact on local communities and road users. Most importantly, the scheme has restored a safer section of the A22 and ensured the road can continue to be used safely by the travelling public.

Thank you for your patience while these works were carried out.
