Cuckmere Buses is celebrating a remarkable milestone in 2026, marking 50 years of serving the community.
The Mayor of Polegate, Cllr Stephen Shing is particularly pleased to have supported Cuckmere Buses since 2001, when serving as a Cllr for the Cuckmere area. Over the years, the Mayor has been fortunate to take part in celebrations marking the organisation’s 25th, 40th and now 50th anniversaries, witnessing its continued contribution to local communities.
The District Councillor Oi Lin Shing also joined the celebrations for the 40th and 50th anniversaries and said: “I am pleased to see Cuckmere Buses going from strength to strength after five decades of service, supported by the long-standing commitment of our town and parish councils.”
This year, Wealden District Council has provided funding for Cuckmere Buses’ first new electric bus, which will benefit the local community. We look forward to seeing it in service and to the positive difference it will make for passengers and the environment.”
The Deputy Mayor Cllr Dan Dunbar was also invited to join this special 50th-anniversary celebration, recognising the dedication of the volunteers, drivers and everyone involved in keeping Cuckmere Buses running.
The figures tell an impressive story. From just 2 buses and 2 services in its first year, Cuckmere Buses has grown to operate 9 buses across 25 services, carrying tens of thousands of passengers and generating significant social value for the community.
Fifty years on, Cuckmere Buses remains a wonderful example of how community spirit, volunteering and long-term support from local councils can make a lasting difference to people’s lives.
Congratulations to everyone involved in Cuckmere Buses on this fantastic golden anniversary and thank you for five decades of dedicated service.
